McCarthy Just Pulled a Shady Move Before Vote Involving Massive Stacks of Pizza

It appears that US Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had a great idea to have a pizza party on Tuesday night at the US Capitol after a historic humiliating loss in his attempt to become Speaker of the US House.

And it appeared that his shady move didn’t move the needle in his direction with votes.

On Wednesday, the House is still in the midst of its fourth vote and appears to have again failed to agree on a speaker. McCarthy has lost enough votes to Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., to force another vote, NPR reported Wednesday, adding:

Here’s where things stand:

  • Rep. Chip Roy of Texas rose to nominate Florida Rep. Byron Donalds for speaker, calling him “a dear friend, a solid conservative.”
  • Democrats have again unanimously nominated Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., as their speaker.
  • McCarthy, R-Calif., has wanted to be Speaker — badly — for years and seemed willing to do a lot of things to get the job.

Donalds had received five votes early on, meaning McCarthy won’t get the fourth chance to get the 218 votes he needs to reach a majority.

A lone few hands of applause and a louder murmur covered the chamber when the fifth Donalds vote was registered.

CNN reported on a North Carolina RINO that was working hard to help McCarthy:

As House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy struggles to secure votes within his party to secure speakership of the chamber, he has tapped a longtime Republican lawmaker to quietly try and lock down votes among the GOP holdouts.

North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry, a Republican and an ally of McCarthy, is one of several lawmakers who have been dispatched to help find a deal with his foes and present their demands to the rest of the House GOP conference. Other lawmakers trying to rally fellow Republicans behind McCarthy to include Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Garret Graves of Louisiana, French Hill of Arkansas, and Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, sources have told CNN.

McHenry said Tuesday night there is a “longer process of negotiation” that needs to happen within the GOP conference but was confident McCarthy would ultimately be elected House speaker. He also told CNN there needs to be “a clear understanding” about what the offers were made going into Tuesday.

“We have to have a wider group of members understand what the trade-offs are, what they look like and the opportunity for the conference to come to terms with getting the 20 on board,” McHenry said, referring to the Republicans who voted against McCarthy on the third ballot Tuesday. “So this is a longer process of negotiation than just a narrow group, talking to a person.”

McHenry, who in November won reelection for his 10th term in North Carolina’s 10th congressional district, was first elected to Congress in 2004. In the new Congress, he has been chosen to chair the House Financial Services Committee, where he has long been a member and held leadership roles, including chairman of the oversight and investigations subcommittee.

An NBC reporter took to Twitter last night and showed dozens of pizzas stacked up on a cart heading to Kevin McCarthy’s office.

The pizza delivery came just hours after McCarthy failed to reach 218 votes three different times.

Take a look at the pizzas being delivered here:

“PIZZA on its way to MCCARTHY office…. Never a good sign,” Haley Talbot (@haleytalbotnbc) posted on Twitter on January 3, 2023.

The Triune Times reported more on the story:

Shortly after the House adjourned due to the fact Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed to reach 218 votes three different votes, a video showed a cart carrying dozens of pizzas heading towards, Kevin McCarthy’s office.

The video was orginally shared by Haley Talbot who serves as a Capitol Hill Producer and Reporter.

The pizzas indicate several members of congress are staying behind and are going to hold meetings with McCarthy.

“Ah, the classic “if you want pizza, you’ll have to come to my office” move. Advantage McCarthy,” Tom Bonier (@tbonier) posted on Twitter on January 3, 2023.

Now, these pizzas could just being delivered for the lawmakers to eat or they could be symbolic of something bigger.

“McCarthy canceled pizza for the rank and file but ordered some for himself? That’s not the way to win votes!” David Nir (@DavidNir) posted on Twitter on January 4, 2023.

“Desperate McCarthy now trading pizza for votes,” Mark Kusler (@profoundlymark) posted on Twitter on January 4, 2023.

Not even Trump could save McCarthy, according to The Hill:

Former President Trump called on House Republicans to unite behind House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) for the Speakership, announcing early Wednesday that he is standing by McCarthy despite opposition from some hard-line members of the party.

Trump said in a Truth Social post that “some really good conversations” were held Tuesday night, and all House Republicans should vote for McCarthy, “close the deal” and “take the victory.

Neither free Pizza nor Trump could get those 20 holdouts to vote for McCarthy… Interesting.
