Inmates charged in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot are being held in a jail in Washington, D.C., that has “deficiencies,” according to US Marshalls.

The admission made Monday in a court filing in the case of Colorado man Robert Gieswein, a suspect in an assault on a Capitol Police officer, offers credence to what inmates, their attorneys, and advocates have been saying for months: that defendants in the Jan. 6 trial are being mistreated.

United States Attorney Matthew Graves said that the U.S. Marshals Service reported on Nov. 1st a “number of concerns” regarding the conditions at the CDF, aka Central Detention Facility, leading to inmates being transferred to another facility. The report did state that the conditions at the Central Treatment Facility (CTF), where Gieswein is currently incarcerated, to be “largely appropriate and consistent with federal prisoner detention standards.” That report changed a little later, though.

In the meantime, the U.S. government has realized that the U.S. Marshals Service is still monitoring the two sites.

“USMS reports that it has observed additional deficiencies through its monitoring, including several deficiencies at CTF,” noted Graves in the filing.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, has visited the jail and has helped bring attention to its deteriorating conditions. Her report, titled “Unusually Cruel: An Eyewitness Report From Inside The DC Jail,” describes poor conditions at the jail’s Jan. 6 wing. Greene’s report states that the jail cells “were extremely small, composed of a single toilet, sink, and a small cot” and walls with “human feces, bodily fluids, blood, dirt, and mold.”

Greene spoke to reporters regarding the Gieswein case and the conditions where he is being held, stating, “This is more evidence proving the conditions at the DC Gulag are atrocious and inhumane. This is more evidence proving J6 pre-trial detainees are being mistreated for being conservative Trump supporters. And this is more evidence proving left-wing political activist Deputy Warden Kathleen Landerkin must be terminated and investigated immediately!”

“When will my Republican conference join me in the fight to stop the two-tiered justice system in America violating human rights?” Greene questioned.

Greene has gone after Landerkin before, stating in a December 16, 2021 tweet that:

“Deputy Warden Kathleen Landerkin, the person in charge of J6 pre-trial detainees is an unhinged left-wing ideologue who despises President Trump, his supporters, and Republicans.

Today, 13 of my colleagues and I sent a letter to @MayorBowser demanding her immediate termination.”

According to Graves, the US Marshals Service will submit a report to the District of Columbia District Court judge by the end of this week. Graves continued: “Because the information in that report is being verified, the government respectfully requests an additional week to respond on behalf of the USMS with respect to the conditions at the CTF.”

Greene released her report early in December of last year. She announced it on her official Twitter account.

“This is a group of men who have no idea of when they are going to court, no ability to bail out, no ability to see their family, and being mistreated and abused worse than terrorists at Gitmo.

Today, I released my report called Unusually Cruel.”

At a Capitol press conference last month, Greene said that J6 defendants were being treated ‘worse’ than terrorists.

‘They have been beaten by the guards. They are called white supremacists. They are denied religious services, haircuts, shaving, the ability to trim their fingernails,’ she said in a joint appearance with Reps. Louis Gohmert, Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar.

In her words, the prisoners are being ‘mistreated and abused worse than we treat terrorists at Gitmo.’

‘They are told that they have to denounce President Trump. They are told that their views are the views of cult members Even though these are men that every single night at 9:00 at night, they put their hand over their heart and sing the national anthem voluntarily,’ Greene went on.

Further, she said prisoners with celiac disease were forced to eat gluten food, causing illness and fasting. In an interview on Steve Bannon’s podcast, she said an inmate could not get gluten-free food unless they paid an additional fee.

In her words, the public defenders for defendants she spoke to ‘hate them’ and ‘tell them they have to denounce their political views, want them to watch videos and read books that basically is critical race theory training.’

Gohmert added that ‘No one’s been charged with insurrection,’ a term often used by Democrats to describe the violence in which no firearms were used.

‘In fact if they were going to charge someone with insurrection, it’s beginning to sound more like those would be agents for the federal government that were there stirring things up, trying to get people to engage in violence,’ Gohmert went on.

Royce Lamberth, a DC judge, released a January 6 defendant last November, stating that there were ‘deplorable’ and ‘beyond belief’ conditions at the detention center where the prisoners are incarcerated.
