While critics were accusing Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of taking a vacation during a spike in Coronavirus cases, Fox News learned the governor accompanied his wife to her cancer treatment.
DeSantis’ spokesperson said the governor accompanied his wife to cancer treatment on Dec. 29, the day the governor was accused by left-wing critics of being “missing.”
According to DeSantis, his wife Casey was diagnosed with breast cancer in October and has made an impact on the lives of countless Floridians through her initiatives as first lady. “She is the heart of our family and has made an impact on the lives of countless Floridians,” he said at the time.
DeSantis was criticized for not being in front of the media during a COVID spike by Democratic Mayor Jerry Demings of Orange County in Florida at a press conference Tuesday.
“Our residents, all Florida residents should be outraged, and they should ask the question, ‘Now, where’s our state? Where’s our governor?'” Demings said. “Where is Ron DeSantis now? When was the last time you saw the governor do a press briefing regarding COVID-19?”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., joined the chorus of critics who described DeSantis as “inexplicably missing.”
Hasn’t Gov. DeSantis been inexplicably missing for like 2 weeks?
If he’s around, I would be happy to say hello. His social media team seems to have been posting old photos for weeks.
In the meantime, perhaps I could help with local organizing. Folks are quite receptive here 🙂 https://t.co/LmmqT8eLDh

“Hasn’t Gov. DeSantis been inexplicably missing for like 2 weeks,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in a tweet during a visit to Florida. “If he’s around, I would be happy to say hello. His social media team seems to have been posting old photos for weeks.”
“In the meantime, perhaps I could help with local organizing,” added Ocasio-Cortez, who was spotted maskless while drinking and dining outdoors in the Sunshine State. “Folks are quite receptive here.”
Joy Reid, the MSNBC host, also hit back at DeSantis, tweeting: “A governor, not governing during a crisis; and sunning his belly on vacation instead. @GovRonDeSantis is the Nero of Ted Cruzes.”
Christina Pushaw, DeSantis’ press secretary, replied to Reid with a photo of DeSantis’ daily schedule and asked, “Have you ever considered that you’re one of the reasons nobody trusts the media?”

Kyle Lamb, a communications staffer for DeSantis, also responded on Twitter to critics asking if DeSantis was on vacation with the following message: “Just FYI, [DeSantis] is not on vacation. Literally no one from our office has said that he is.
“Anyone pushing that could have easily seen the public schedule and seen that he’s taking calls and meetings this past week,” Lamb added. “Not having public events does not = ‘vacation.'”
As we reported on Friday, Ocasio-Cortes is in no place to call anyone out on going “missing” as she did, ironically, in DeSantis’ free state, soaking up the sun and cocktails maskless, while her New York constituents are forced inside for the holidays.
On Thursday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the face of progressives in Congress, had a maskless meal in Miami Beach, Florida, even though she supports mask and vaccine mandates that Florida does not require.
The ‘Squad’ member shared a drink and a laugh with a diner who wasn’t identified in photos posted by the National Review.
Conservatives mocked Ocasio-Cortez over her strict stance on COVID protocols on Twitter, including an account devoted to and endorsed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who invited her to ‘enjoy a taste of freedom’ in the Sunshine State.
‘Welcome to Florida, AOC! We hope you’re enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State thanks to @RonDeSantisFL’s leadership,’ the Team DeSantis Twitter account posted.
‘P.S. We recommend the Rock Shrimp Roll and the Aoki Tai the next time you decide to dine in Miami. Cheers!,’ was posted in a follow-up tweet.
Others criticized her for flouting COVID rules. ‘You’re being played by @AOC dummies,’ Kyle Becker, who owns the conservative news site Becker News, posted.
‘Hey @AOC tell me you endorse @RonDeSantisFL without telling me you endorse @RonDeSantisFL,’ Shawn Farash wrote. Farash runs the conservative group Long Island Loud Majority.
Ocasio-Cortez flew to Florida amid a spike in COVID cases causing a record number of New York City first responders to call in sick. Fox News reported that more than 20% of the city’s police officers and 30% of its paramedics were out sick on Thursday.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who will be sworn in at the end of the month, said he intends to keep many of outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio’s restrictions in place, including a requirement that individuals be vaccinated before entering local businesses.
